String Instruments:

Solid Body Guitars.
A solid body musical instrument is a string instrument such as a guitar, bass or violin built without its normal sound box and relying on an electric pickup system to directly receive the vibrations of the strings.

Difference between a Guitar and a Ukulele:

  • Guitars are bigger than ukuleles in size.
  • Guitarists prefer nylon strings or steel strings for their instrument, but ukulele players prefer nylon strings rather than using steel strings.
  • The standard guitar has six strings attached to it while a standard ukulele has only four strings.
  • There are only two kinds of guitars: acoustic guitars and electric guitars. The ukulele, on the other hand, has four classical kinds: soprano, concert or alto ukulele, tenor, and the largest ukulele is baritone.

Solid Body Electric Guitars:

Semi-Acoustic, Semi-Hollow Body 'F'-hole Electric Guitars:

Gibson Es-335 demo
These guitars present their own problems when rewiring or replacing potentiometers, capacitors or the switch. To carryout this work the full harness containing the components has to be brought out and returned to the guitar via one of the 'F'-holes. This is tricky and time consuming. Therefore being able to test all the components including the wiring before reinstalling the harness is a great advantage.
Below is a test rig that can fully test the wiring, components and pickups while they are out of the guitar. The rig can also be used on other types of electric guitars.
It is simple to build. All that is needed is a tuner/amplifier unit and a small current transformer used as a coil. Just set the tuner to a music station when testing.
Below explains how the vibration of the strings interact with the magnetic field of the pickup. Therefore the magnetic flux produced by the magnetised vibrating strings can be replaced with the magnetic flux produced by a magnetised coil driven by the audio signal(music) from the tuner/amplifier. The music will then be heard from the connected guitar amplifier.
This allows the pickups, volume and tone controls as well as the pickup selector switch to be operated and tested fully without installing the strings.

Multi-neck Guitars:
A multi-neck guitar is a guitar that has multiple fingerboard necks. They exist in both electric and acoustic versions. Although multi-neck guitars are quite common today, they are not a modern invention. Examples of multi-neck guitars and lutes go back at least to the Renaissance.
Today, the most common type of multi-neck guitar is the double neck guitar, of which the most common version is an electric guitar with twelve strings on the upper neck, while the lower neck has the normal six. Combination six-string and bass guitar are also used, as well as a fretless guitar with a regular fretted guitar, or any other combination of guitar neck and pickup styles. There are also acoustic versions. Two necks allows the guitarist to switch quickly and easily between guitar sounds without taking the time to change guitars.
